J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth from a 21st Century Radio perspective!
Sunday, December 2, 2001, from 7-9 PM Eastern on 21st Century Radio.

Not only will you be able to win fantastic Tolkien figurines, but our guests, Drs. Verlyn Flieger and Stanley McDaniel will give you a perspective on Tolkien's mythology that you won't get anywhere else! First we'll examine A Question of Time: J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie, and learn that Tolkien's concern with time -- past and present, real and "faerie" -- captures the wonder and peril of travel into other worlds, other times, other modes of consciousness. Reading his work, we "fall wide asleep" into a dream more real than ordinary waking experience and emerge with a new perception of the waking world.

Then we will learn about The Unconscious Origin of the word "Hobbit". Though Tolkien was a studied linguist and scholar of languages, this new word was not a piece of accidental trivia vaguely connected with rabbit or hobby (as some have thought), and it was not a deliberate, consciously chosen name. It came to Tolkien in a rare moment of spontaneous intuition. He was busy grading examination papers when the word popped into his mind -- not alone but as part of a whole sentence:

In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.

Why this made him sit up and take notice -- this Sunday Night at 7 on 21st Century Radio, right here on Talk Radio 680 WCBM!
