(Washington DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, said today that it has filed formal complaints against French President Jacques Chirac and senior officials of other governments and corporations for the unlawful proliferation of nuclear technology, the unlawful trafficking of arms and military technology, and the violation of United Nations (U.N.) trade sanctions imposed after the 1991 Gulf War, as well as additional U.N. sanctions relating to the so-called “oil-for-food” program. The complaints were filed with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the European Police Office (EUROPOL).

In particular, Judicial Watch has requested an investigation and analysis, by means of forensic accounting, of financial contacts and dealings between Mr. Chirac’s “Rally for the Republic” political party, other political parties and government officials and/or corporations involved in the unlawful activity. These unlawful activities involved private persons, corporations and government officials from: France, Iraq, the Peoples’ Republic of China, and Syria. It is likely that several other parties and countries, unknown at this time, are also involved in the criminal conspiracy.

Saddam Hussein described his relationship with corrupt French politicians in the 1991 book, Notre Allies Saddam, by French journalists Claude Angeli and Stephanie Mesnier, when he said: “As for financiers, industrialists and above all those responsible for military industry, the question must be put to French politicians: Who did not benefit from these business contracts and relationships with Iraq? ... With respect to the politicians, one need only refer back to the declarations of all the political parties of France, Right and Left. All were happy to brag about their friendship with Iraq and to refer to common interests.”

“President Chirac has also been accused by French authorities of accepting bribes while being Mayor of Paris. A French judicial commission ruled recently that Chirac could not be prosecuted until he left office. However, INTERPOL and EUROPOL have no constraints in beginning an investigation of President Chirac. He and his colleagues’ violations of law and public trust are a disgrace to the high ideals upon which the French Republic was founded,” stated Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman.

Judicial Watch is in the process of opening branch offices in London and Brussels, called Judicial Watch - Europe.
