The
Bowie Baysox paid tribute to The Beatles during a game against the Norwich
Navigators at the Prince George's County stadium June 13, 2002.
A double-A Minor League Baseball farm team for the Major League Baltimore
Orioles, the Baysox organization does some terrific community outreach and, in
fact, had invited us to attend another game the week before to honor the old
Negro Leagues baseball players (visit www.nlbpa.com for photos of this event).
Tapping
into the perpetual popularity of the Fab Four, the Baysox Tribute to the Beatles
night included top notch music from look-alike and sound alike Maryland band,
"Eight Days a Week". Heads
were bobbing and feet were tapping to their luscious harmonies that brought 1963
flooding back to the delighted fans. Check
out their website for more about this talented foursome.
As
a local author of Inside The Yellow Submarine: The Making of the Beatles
Animated Classic, Dr. Bob Hieronimus was honored with an invitation to throw out
the first pitch and hand out information to the crowd. Thanks to helpers pictured to the right: Sarah Clark, Leon
Day, Jr., Geraldine Day and Laura Cortner, we sponsored a free raffle and
awarded three lucky winners with special Yellow Submarine collectibles.
Prizes included McFarlane figures of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, a
Ringo Starr model kit from Polar Lights, a George Harrison special tribute
Rolling Stone Magazine, a Lyon Co. lunch box, a Chief Blue Meanie Beanie and a
signed copy of Dr. Bob's Inside The Yellow Submarine (click here for ordering
info for Dr. Bob's book or call 1-800-258-0929).
Before
the first pitch, Dr. Bob took advantage of a momentary drizzle to chat with the
Bowie Baysox players in the dugout. Much
to our delight we discovered several of them were fans of Zohara's Future Talk
program and had a great interest in 21st Century Radio topics like the
paranormal, UFOs, alternative healing and energy systems.
Beatles
tribute band " Eight Days a Week" sang the National Anthem. Here are
Chris Weaver as Ringo Starr, Mike Chapman as George Harrison, John Perry as Paul
McCartney and Lucien Nocelli as
John Lennon, waiting out the rain with Dr. Bob Hieronimus in the dugout.
Here's
the highlight of Dr. Bob's baseball career, the windup and the ceremonial first
pitch of the game, which was high and outside, but still a delight!
A
rousing time was had by all, and we highly recommend you attend a Baysox game in
the near future! A great family
event, with loads of community outreach programs. www.baysox.com.
